Sermon 09/14/2025

From September 14, 2025 Sermon – Genesis 18:16-33

The sermon makes the point that, given the language of verse 19, the specific covenant bond of Genesis 15, the nature of the questions and responses, and the NT witness of James 2:23, this interchange is not Abraham haggling with God.  Rather, the interchange sits within the context of their friendship.  With that in mind, consider the following questions:

1) What would friendship with God be like?  What kind of issues, benefits, challenges, frustrations, etc. would it include?

2) Are Abraham’s requests and questions appropriate?  Why or why not?  How does the covenant relationship that Abraham has with God affect how he can speak with God?

3) Would you describe your relationship with God as friendship?  Why or why not?

4) How does Jesus make it possible for us to be a friend of God?  You may want to consider the covenant ceremony of Genesis 15, as well as Matthew 9:10-13 and Luke 7:33, 34.

5) How can you (individually and as a group) cultivate friendship with God this week?

*Due to a problem with the recording, this week there is no audio from the service.  However, attached is Shaun’s manuscript of the sermon.  While the manuscript is not identical to the sermon as it was preached, it should still provide you with the background you need for the discussion questions.*
